The Supreme Court is Dead!

Following today's scrape, r/Politics had just shy of 10x normal traffic. I've only just started going through the data, but Amy Barrett being confirmed to the US Supreme Court is the cause of it all. On Twitter, #amyconeybarrett completely dominates anything #trump related, and people are not happy, not including those who are very happy. It's clearly a hugely divisive issue.

I'm going to have to break this down into multiple parts due to the size of the dataset I have to work through (edited to add: turns out I don't need to break things down into multiple topics, it just so turns out that basically everyone is talking about the Supreme Court all at the same time...), but on the Politics subreddit, the main topics of discussion relate to Supreme Court reform. Issues raised include:

* Supreme Court expansion
* Introducing term limits
* The need to reform lower courts, as they have also been packed by the Republicans
* If the presidential election result is contested, what will the result be, especially given Barrett's involvement in the recount dispute in Florida's 2000 presidential election?
* If the Democrats pack the court, what will stop the Republicans from stacking it more if they ever regain power?
* How will the decision influence abortion rights, marriage equality and the Affordable Care Act?

There is a lot of criticism of Barrett (she is starting to become popularly known as Judge Amy, and not in a good way) given her perceived lack of experience, having only practiced as a judge for three years. There is a large group opinion that she was selected and rushed through specifically to help steal the election, with people saying she has the exact experience Trump needs right now, relating to the 2000 election.

There is a lot of discussion that Biden needs to increase the number of SCOTUS justices to restore a liberal balance, with a lot of people responding that Biden needs to depoliticise the court system, not shift the political balance.

Wisconsin and mail in voting is yet another issue coming up, thanks in no small part to the SCOTUS deciding that absentee ballots that arrive after 8pm on election day won't be counted. People are not happy, but as far as I can tell, it is a pretty clear cut decision, with Wisconsin law defining 8pm as the official cutoff time.

p.s. it was also Hillary Clinton's birthday. I just scraped YouTube because I haven't done it in a while, and they all seem to be pleased at the 'coincidence'.

Strangely enough, the vast majority of comments are extremely pro Barrett. The sentiment analysis had an extremely high positive compound score, and the third most frequently occurring word was "God", as in:

Quote:
Good day for all Americans the dems dont realize it. God is in control.

Quote:
It's seems that we are at war with people in our government that doesn't believe in God. And want to rid of God. God help us.

Quote:
IN GOD WE TRUST PRAY AND THANK HIM FOR AMY CONEY BARRETT GOD BLESS THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

A small minority of people have noticed how fast the senate was able to work to get the nomination through, yet can't seem to manage the next round of stimulus payments. A slightly smaller minority want term limits for the SCOTUS, senate and congress.

The popular theme across social media on this first day of November in the year of our Lord two thousand and twenty is voter suppression.

The big thing on Twitter was white supremacists being escorted through a predominantly black neighbourhood by the Fort Worth Police Department.

Quote:
Pro Trump white supremacists, escorted by @fortworthpd, tried to intimidate Black voters at a polling station in a predominantly Black neighborhood.

Brothers and sisters were having none of it.

The 'Biden Bus' almost being run off the road by a 'Trump Train' convoy was also a very popular topic...

It is going to take some major judicial reform to restore any form of confidence in the US political system once this election is over. These are some of the comments I've pulled from reddit, and there are a lot like them...

Quote:
Few democracies these days are killed by coups. They die when aspiring autocrats get elected and subvert democracy from inside. The recipes they use are time-tested ones involving similar ingredients in varying combinations: sabotaging or rewriting constitutions in order to gut checks and balances on executive power; sidelining legislative bodies while claiming to be “the voice of the people”; packing courts and government agencies with loyalists while purging experts and civil servants; delegitimizing political opponents and electoral processes; attacking or censoring the free press; tolerating or encouraging violence on the part of supporters; threatening to take legal action against political rivals.

Quote:
I'm a New Zealander and we have a pretty moderate polite and generally courteous political rivalry. So from this angle objectively what I'm seeing happening there is BATSHIT BONKERS. I can barely believe one headline from the next. This is by far the craziest shit I've seen in my 40+ years in a western democracy and I feel heavy hearted for those good Americans that are seeing a their home and beliefs and democratic rights just pillaged and burned. Throw in being the worst covid affected country on Earth and holy fuckery you guys need a hug?

Quote:
If Trump wins, it is no exaggeration to say that there will be no election after that. Right NOW, we can't say we are having free and fair elections.\n\n People have been practically sleeping at the courthouse with the amount of voter suppression tactics they have to fend off. In order for the guy CLEARLY in the lead to win, we have to overwhelm the election with turn out just to squeak a victory through. Today we have police arresting and spraying people for walking to the polls en masse.

Quote:
We don’t like the construct of that narrative,” sniffed an unnamed Republican National Committee Official this morning to Politico’s Anita Kumar. And then Mr. Anonymous RNC raced to the courthouse to request another emergency injunction closing down ballot drop boxes. Probably. “That narrative” would be that the GOP is working overtime to deny Americans access to the ballot and invalidate as many votes as possible. And it’s understandable that the Republican party would object to accusations that it’s engaged in a wholesale effort to thwart the exercise of democracy. But if they didn’t want to be called the party of vote suppressors, they could always quit doing everything in their power to suppress the vote! Just last night the Trump campaign managed to convince one of the ABA-rejects Trump appointed to the Eight Circuit to order Minnesota to set aside ballots postmarked November 3 but received after the polls close so the RNC can sue to get them thrown out later. We’re no longer even pretending this is an effort to protect electoral integrity by weeding out fraudulent ballots and demanding ID at the polls — this is purely an exercise in rejecting votes. The Eighth Circuit took its lead from the ascendant conservative wing of the Supreme Court, which three times this week signaled that it’s ready and willing to swoop in and toss out late-arriving ballots if the GOP thinks it might put Trump over the top. Republicans have filed upwards of a dozen suits, in places as diverse as Michigan, Iowa, New Jersey, and Nevada to prevent universal access to mail in ballots. They’ve litigated in Texas, Pennsylvania, and Ohio over ballot drop boxes. The president himself gave up the game in March, complaining to his pals at Fox & Friends that early voting would kill the GOP. “They had things — levels of voting that, if you ever agreed to it, you’d never have a Republican elected in this country again,” he whined. So the party dutifully sued to limit early voting. And to force people to vote in person during a pandemic. And to allow GOP-leaning seniors to vote by mail without an excuse, but no one else. For pity’s sake, Republicans in Texas are in court right now trying to get votes already cast in drive-through polling stations in Harris County tossed out. And if that wasn’t clear enough, here’s Donald Trump reminding the Supreme Court Justices that they will rue the day if they allow Joe Biden to become president. As one does at 3am. If Sleepy Joe Biden is actually elected President, the 4 Justices (plus1) that helped make such a ridiculous win possible would be relegated to sitting on not only a heavily PACKED COURT, but probably a REVOLVING COURT as well. At least the many new Justices will be Radical Left! - Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) October 30, 2020 And if that’s too subtle, the RNC itself bragged back in May that it had earmarked $20 million dollars for pre- and post-election litigation.

Well, I just watched a video of Dem and Republicans shouting shit at each other, pulling guns on each other, and other verbal/physical mayhem.

Personally, I'd have shot most people there, better I stay in Australia!

Personally, I think it is time Australia started accepting American refugees on humanitarian grounds...

Well, here in Perth we have more than a few, usually (but not only) people that have come here for the gas bonanza, and careers related to that. I personally know one or three, two retired like me, who have turned down going back to the USA, far more peaceful and safe here.

I could do without a bunch of proto-commie loons from the US west coast, what's wrong with them going to New Zealand instead?

Breaking News: The Supreme Court blocked New York’s virus-imposed limits on religious services. Justice Amy Coney Barrett was a decisive vote in the 5-4 ruling.

Charles Darwin would be proud.
