First Portuguese Super Lynx to begin modernisation

The first of five AgustaWestland Super Lynx Mk 95 helicopters operated by the Portuguese Navy will be delivered to Leonardo Helicopters' Yeovil facility in the United Kingdom in June to begin its comprehensive modernisation programme.

Work on all five units will be completed under a EUR69 million (USD75 million) modernisation package awarded to Leonardo Helicopters in July 2016. The upgrade includes the replacement of the original Rolls-Royce Gem 42 engines with more powerful LHTEC CTS800-4N turboshafts. Other improvements include a new 'glass' cockpit utilising three 10x8-inch multifunction displays, new navigation systems, and a new electrically powered rescue hoist.

The upgrade will also extend the fleet's service life, deal with airworthiness obsolescence, and allow it to meet new European flight standards due to come into effect in 2018.

Russia may develop advanced Ka-62 helicopter’s shipborne version

MOSCOW, May 26. /TASS/. The Kamov Design Bureau may develop the advanced Ka-62 helicopter’s shipborne version with folding blades and the tailpiece, Kamov Chief Designer Sergei Mikheyev said at the HeliRussia-2017 helicopter industry exhibition on Friday.

"There is simply the idea of placing the Ka-62 on a ship where hangars are created. An original solution is envisaged: folded blades," he said.

The helicopter’s relevant makeup, which has already been created, envisages folding both the blades and the tailpiece, the chief designer said.

"We have created a completely unique helicopter capable of substituting a big niche and capable of performing tasks both for military and civil goals," Mikheyev said.

The flight model of Russia’s most advanced Ka-62 helicopter performed its first trial flight over the site of "Progress" Arsenyev Aviation Company, part of Russian Helicopters Group, on Thursday.

The flight lasted 15 minutes and showed that all of the helicopter’s necessary adjustments had been successfully completed, the Russian Helicopters press office reported.

The test pilots of the Ka-62’s main developer (the Kamov Company) assessed the helicopter’s overall performance capacity and checked the operation of its basic power supply systems, onboard equipment and the engine unit.

Specifically, the test pilots checked the helicopter’s stability and controllability and the operability of its basic systems and complexes.

The Ka-62 performed the 15-minute flight around a circle at a speed of 110 km/hr.

The Ka-62 flight model got off the ground for the first time in April this year to assess its general operability and check the operation of its basic power supply systems and onboard equipment.

The Ka-62 is designated to transport passengers, carry out rescue operations and also works in the oil and gas sector. The helicopter’s high power-to-weight ratio offers a wide range of altitudes for its operation. The Ka-62 can be used in a hot climate and it can perform flights above the sea.

German Navy weighs up Lynx replacement options

The German Navy is currently studying options for the programme to replace the service's AgustaWestland Lynx Mk 88A helicopters, which are primarily used as shipboard helicopters operating from frigates.

Speaking at the UDT 2017 conference in Bremen, Germany, Commander René Levien, a German Navy Staff underwater warfare expert, said that consideration is being given to a mix of manned and unmanned systems, with final numbers still to be determined.

The German Navy’s Lynx helicopters entered service in the 1980s and were updated to the Mk 88A standard around 2000.

According to Cdr Levien, the existing engines and avionics will reach obsolescence by 2025. To achieve an initial operating capability (IOC) with the replacement type by 2025, the new aircraft will have to arrive from 2023, he said.

The focus for the replacement capability will be on anti-submarine warfare and anti-surface warfare.

One option is the missionised version of the NHIndustries NFH90 helicopter, currently being introduced by the Germany Navy in a transport and search-and-rescue (SAR) role to replace its legacy fleet of Westland Sea King helicopters. Also under consideration is the latest version of the Lynx: the AW159 Wildcat.

“We are looking at aircraft in a size bracket up to NH90," Cdr Levien noted. "They have to fit the hangars on our frigates."

While the NH90 variant would entail benefits in terms of logistics by reducing the number of types in service, the other candidates also bring unique opportunities, including furthering defence co-operation with the United Kingdom.

A UK Royal Navy Wildcat HMA Mk.2 and 11 personnel have been embarked on the German Type 122 frigate FGS Luebeck since April 2017, working with the ship as it conducts German Operational Sea Training (GOST) out of Plymouth.

Airbus helicopters won't be happy though that the German Navy is physically testing an AW159 Wildcat, albeit it could be nothing more than setting a benchmark to measure NH90 against......................?

Canada's Cyclone helicopters return to limited flying

Canada’s fleet of Sikorsky CH-148 Cyclone helicopters have returned to limited flying following a two-month grounding, after a software issue was detected with the aircraft’s flight control computers.

An investigation by the manufacturer found the software problem affects all the Cyclone aircraft. An update to eliminate the issue will be in place before Block 2 deliveries begin, says Sikorsky, but the firm, fixed-price contract covering the programme ensures that no costs will be borne by the customer.

The software issue will cause a one-month delay for aircraft training, but the Royal Canadian Air Force expects initial operational capability for the CH-148 will remain on schedule for April 2018.

“Based on the root cause of this particular issue, the fix is 100% software,” says Doug Baker, project manager for the maritime helicopter programme. “From that perspective, too, that makes the retrofit fairly straightforward.”

The RCAF's 12 Wing at its Shearwater base in Nova Scotia has five helicopters being used for operational training and evaluation, with a number having returned to the manufacturer for the Block 2 update. Sikorsky will deliver four more between now and the end of the summer for a total of 14 Block 1 aircraft. The first six Block 2 types are still scheduled for delivery in June 2018, with all 28 helicopters to arrive by 2021.

The RCAF expects Sikorsky will have the software fix retrofitted for aircraft stationed at 12 Wing and Block 2 production line models by late 2017, Baker says.

After grounding the fleet in early March, Sikorsky flight-test aircraft resumed sorties on 27 April and five Canadian helicopters stationed at Shearwater returned to flight on 16 May. The rotorcraft initially began flying as the investigation progressed, a Sikorsky spokesman says.

After discovering the flight-control issue, the RCAF resumed some flight testing with the most severe restrictions impacting operations at low speeds close to the ground, says Colonel Peter Allan, 12 Wing commander. The service could not hoist personnel, sling cargo, execute sloped landings, practice manoeuvres close to the ground or take off and land on ships, he says. That left operators with the ability to depart from the training base at Shearwater to maintain currency and basic point-to-point navigation.

“We still managed to progress some testing from that flight posture,” Allan says. “High-level surveillance missions where we’re not manoeuvring close to the ground but we’re still able to employ a bunch of our tactical systems to support any kind of an operation.”

While Shearwater lifted the most severe restrictions on 9 June, to return to hoisting and shipboard operations, limitations on induced pitch and roll remain. Those restrictions only apply at certain altitudes and modes of the flight-control system, Allan says.

“So we can still do those manoeuvres, just in different modes than we might otherwise have done them,” he says. “It’s more of a technical restriction and avoiding certain pieces of the code really in the software, making sure we don’t induce a fault, but Sikorsky has narrowed down very specifically what pieces of the code are affected in the software and how we would induce those pieces of code to be triggered.”

India Scraps One Billion Dollar Deal of Multirole Helicopters with Sikorsky

NEW DELHI --- A few days ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to the US, the Indian defense ministry has scrapped a naval multi-role helicopter deal with US firm Sikorsky after failing to reach an agreement on price since 2014.

The decision was taken after the cost negotiation committee recommended retraction of the tender for 16 multi-role helicopters. The Indian Navy had initiated the procurement of multi-role helicopters for its warships capable of anti-submarine warfare in 2009. Sikorsky's 70B and European NH-90 had cleared the technical trial but NH-90 had faced disqualification for commercial bid due to corruption charges in a defense deal with India, which was linked to NH-90's parent company Finmeccanica.

"The deal for procuring 16 helicopters for the Navy has been scrapped by the Defense Ministry after it was stuck for over two years on price, and the American firm Sikorsky refused to extend the validity of its commercial bid," Government sources told Mail Today.

The Indian Navy is in dire need of multi-role helicopter for anti-submarine warfare, anti-surface warfare mission because of its aging Sea King fleet. Due to the immediate requirement, the Indian government was going ahead with Sikorsky despite a single bid tender, which is against India's defense procurement rule.

With the acquisition of S-70B, Indian Navy was expecting a long overdue modern, battle-proven helicopter for anti-submarine warfare and vertical replenishment. "It may be very nice from an indigenization point but Navy needs helicopters very urgently. Our capability is very much compromised. We don't have helicopters on our ships," Anil Jai Singh, a retired Indian Navy commodore, and defense analyst told Sputnik.

Initially, Indian Navy had planned a total of 140 naval multi-role helicopter, out of which only 16 was being planned to bought in flyway condition while 124 were to be manufactured in India under country's indigenization boost. It is now considering a fresh tender for 140 helicopters under Make in India program.

"We should have got those (16) first and gone ahead with indigenization or whatever strategic partnership could have been made after that. My opinion is that you can't compromise nation's combat capability because of some experiment you want to do with indigenization, Make in India, or strategic partnership. By all means you can go ahead and do that but only after fulfilling the immediate requirement," Anil Jai Singh added.

Earlier this year, Indian Navy has asked for additional funds to augment anti-submarine warfare capability in the backdrop of increased presence of Chinese naval ships in the Indian Ocean region.

"New helicopters should have been inducted in the naval fleet by 2008-09, but they have not arrived yet. The ships, such as INS Chennai, INS Kochi and INS Delhi, are already commissioned, but they are moving without new helicopters. The demand is in excess of 100 and we have a requirement of multi-role helicopters with facilities such as anti-submarine, anti-surface equipment, sonar facility. It is not about when we want it, we have crossed that line. Currently, we are using old Sea King helicopters for some works," Western Naval Command chief Girish Luthra had said.

India's state-owned HAL is also working on naval multi-role helicopters and is expected to find support from the Narendra Modi government.

Norway prepares for first naval deployment of NH90 helicopter

Norway will embark one of its NH Industries NH90 NFH helicopters for the first time later this summer, but has again offered thinly veiled criticism of the 11t-class rotorcraft, deliveries of which are running 10 years behind schedule.

Speaking at the opening of a new maintenance hangar for the NH90 at Bardufoss air base in the north of the country, defence minister Øystein Bø announced that a NFH from the Royal Norwegian Air Force's (RNoAF) 337 Sqn would deploy on a Nordkapp-class offshore patrol vessel later this summer.

Although the NH90s have performed training aboard a number of ships, the milestone, likely to be in August, is the first operational deployment for the helicopter.

Bø says he is pleased at the development, but points out that the one thing souring the occasion is the slow pace of the contract.

“As you all know, the NH90 helicopters are many years overdue, and we still have not received all of our new helicopters,” he says.

Deliveries of the NH90s were originally scheduled for 2005-2008, Oslo’s defence ministry says, but have been delayed by a decade thanks to “quality issues in the production of the supplier”.


Royal Norwegian Air Force

Naval variants of the NH90 for the export market are assembled by NHI consortium member Leonardo Helicopters in Tessera, Italy. Airbus Helicopters and Fokker are the venture’s other members.

So far, the RNoAF has received six of an eventual 14 NH90s, all in an initial operational configuration. The remainder will be handed over in full operational configuration from 2017-2020, with full deployment from 2022.

The new maintenance facility at Bardufoss includes a composite repair capability, the first in the region, which means the NH90s will not need to return to Italy in the case of fuselage damage.

Yeah gods, the RAN dodged a huge train wreck when they went with SeaHawk Romeo, now if they can only stop 'Australianising' them.

The private comments by the Norwegians are even less complimentary..........they'd have now preferred Wildcat Lynx or even AW-101, which the Coastguard are very happy with, especially the ruggedness, three engines, and range..............

South Korea Navy commissions final batch of AW159 anti-submarine helicopters

South Korea has commissioned its final batch of four AW159 helicopters with anti-submarine warfare capabilities, according to a 5 July report carried by the Republic of Korea Armed Forces' KFN Defense TV .

The aircraft, which was handed over by Leonardo's Helicopter Division in November 2016, is part of an order for eight airframes under the country's Maritime Operational Helicopter project. The programme seeks to improve the Republic of Korea Navy's (RoKN's) submarine prosecution capabilities. South Korea received its first batch of four AW159s in June 2016.

According to specifications provided by Leonardo, the AW159 helicopter features a maximum take-off weight of six tonnes, a maximum range of 265 n miles (490 km), and a maximum endurance of 2 hours and 40 minutes at 6,000 ft.

The platform's suite of sensors include the Compact FLASH Sonics low-frequency, long-range dipping sonar system from Thales, and the Seaspray 7000E active electronically scanned array radar supplied by Selex. The aircraft can be armed with lightweight torpedoes, such as the K745 Cheong Sangeo (Blue Shark), and depth charges to prosecute underwater adversaries.

Wildcat Intensive Training with German Navy

The Fleet Air Arm’s newest helicopter has proved it can deploy with the German Navy after seven weeks’ intensive training aboard the frigate Lübeck.

A Wildcat helicopter from Royal Naval Air Station (RNAS) Yeovilton joined a German warship throughout its pre-deployment training – the first time the Royal Navy’s newest operational helicopter has embarked with any foreign vessel.

When the German Navy’s Lynx started to suffer from problems with cracks in their tails, they looked too their allies for assistance and 815 Naval Air Squadron (NAS) offered one of its Wildcat helicopters as a replacement.

Only one of the 11-strong team of fliers and engineers was a natural linguist. The rest underwent three hours of German lessons a day for five months (‘Operation Language Barrier’) – all while the aircrew were learning to convert from the Lynx to the Wildcat – before joining the Lübeck.

The Wildcat Flight then spent the winter at the German Navy’s Nordholz air base (their counterpart to RNAS Yeovilton) and Wilhelmshaven (Germany’s Portsmouth) where Lübeck is based to get their first taste of working directly with the Deutsche Marine.

At the end of April, the fliers were finally ready to join their ship as it went through Operational Sea Training – provided by the Royal Navy off Plymouth.

They found the Lübeck’s flight deck “perilously narrow”, but still not as tight a fit as the hangar; the helicopter squeezed in with just 15 centimetres to spare at the nose and tail.

Frigate and helicopter then went through the rigours of training – fighting fires, fending off air and submarine attacks, responding to disasters ashore, carrying out escort duties and much more, interspersed with quieter weekends when the German Matrosen (matelots) introduced the Brits to the concept of Einlaufbiers – parties which began as soon as each week’s training ended.

Fregattenkapitän Matthias Schmitt, Lübeck’s Commanding Officer, said together the Brits and Germans made “a really great team that I can rely on”… after a few initial language difficulties.

“To make it easier for the British crew to get used to daily life on board, all the announcements on the loudspeakers were repeated in English,” he explained.

“There was a lot of German spoken, a bit of English and sometimes ‘Denglisch’ – and when they couldn’t find the right word, hands and feet were used.”

Like Bordhubschrauber. Hubschrauber (literally ‘screw which lifts’) is helicopter. Bordhubschrauber is an embarked/ship-borne helicopter (the Germans like to ram words together…).

The most common phrase over the loudspeakers throughout training: Achtung, Wildkatze! Action Wildcat!

213 Flight were due to remain with the Lübeck throughout her subsequent deployment, but for operational reasons the Wildcat isn’t joining the frigate on her migrant mission in the Mediterranean.

“Our German adventure has been an enormous challenge, and we’re devastated that it’s been cut short due to operational reasons,” said 213 Flight Commander Lt Oliver Brooksbank.

“But we’ve proven that we can operate a brand new-helicopter in a different language on a foreign ship – and do it as effectively as on board a Royal Navy ship. Wildcat and Lübeck were entirely integrated, compatible, and ready for further NATO tasking.

“Zwei Marinen, eine Mannschaft – two navies, one crew – has been our mantra for the whole mission, and wherever the Royal Navy sends us, we hope to work with the German Navy along the way.”

L3 Wescam receives MX-15 orders

L3 Technologies’ Wescam has received an order from Airbus Helicopters to provide MX-15 electro-optical/infrared (EO/IR) imaging systems for installation on multiple fleets of H225M Caracal helicopters, the company announced on 19 July.

The 37 systems will be installed in France before being delivered to two foreign governments for military deployment.

The first delivery of 19 units will support a variety of missions, including search and rescue, aeromedical evacuation and assistance and disaster relief. The second delivery will provide a highly detailed, multispectral view of combat search and rescue, naval operations, medical evacuation and military transportation efforts.

The MX-15 can be configured with up to six imaging and lasing payloads. Its sensor options include a high-definition thermal imager, colour low-light continuous zoom, daylight step zoom spotter, day/night spotter, laser rangefinder and a laser illuminator.

Helibras Takes Important Step Towards H225M Certification for Naval Operations

Helibras carried out the second flight of the H225M certification campaign in the Naval Operational version at its facilities in Itajubá (MG). The event was attended by the Certifying Authority, the Institute of Industrial Development and Coordination (IFI), as well as Helibras personnel.

The scope analyzed by the certifying authority was the integration of the AM-39 anti-ship missile, carried out by Helibras. The flight qualities and the performance of the aircraft with the weapons installed was evaluated. Other aspects of the Naval System (NTDMS) will soon be evaluated to complete aircraft certification.

During the event, firing of the AM-39 missile were carried out using the Tactical Naval Mission System. "We have concluded another important step in the certification process of this version. New flights will be carried out in August, this time to evaluate other systems present in the operational version of the Navy, "explains the president of Helibras, Richard Marelli.

Aircraft n° BRA-005 will be the first H225M in an operational version to be delivered to the Brazilian Navy in 2018. The helicopter is part of the contract for 50 H-XBR H225M helicopters purchased by the Ministry of Defense for the Brazilian Armed Forces. These are being produced by Helibras in Brazil, thanks to the transfer of technology and know-how that has been occurring since 2010.

Indian Navy floats $10B helicopter acquisition program

NEW DELHI ― India’s Ministry of Defence on Wednesday issued a global request for information as the country seeks to award a $10 billion deal for 123 naval multirole helicopters and 111 naval multi-utility helicopters for its Navy.

“RFI for purchase 123 NMRH and 111 NMUH have been sent to Lockheed Martin (which has acquired Sikorsky) and Bell Helicopter of U.S., Airbus Helicopters of France, and Russian Helicopters of Russia,” according to an MoD official.

The helicopters would be built at Indian facilities, as the purchase program is part of the new Strategic Partners policy, announced in May this year, under which a strategic partner selected only from among domestic private sector companies will tie up with an overseas original equipment manufacturer.

Both the OEM and strategic partner will be selected by the MoD.

“Since the current exercise is to select the overseas OEMS, the selection of domestic strategic partner will take place later this year,” the MoD official added.

Domestic private companies, which will compete to be that strategic partner for both helicopters programs are Bharat Forge Limited, Reliance Defence and Engineering Limited, Larsen & Toubro, Mahindra Aerospace, and Tata Advanced Systems Limited.

The Indian Navy is looking to buy 123 naval multirole helicopters valued at more than $7 billion in the 9- to 12.5-ton category. These helicopters would perform search-and-rescue and anti-submarine warfare roles.

Additionally, the service seeks to purchase 111 multi-utility helicopters worth more than $3 billion in the 4.5-ton category.

These helicopters will take on the roles of light anti-submarine warfare (carriage of one lightweight torpedo or two depth charges), logistics, search and rescue, observation and electronic intelligence, and anti-piracy missions, for which demand is rising in the Indian Ocean. The helos will carry rocket pods and 12.7mm machine guns.

The Navy’s aging light-utility helicopter, the Chetak, is in need of a replacement. The Chetak is a licensed version of the Aeros­patiale Alouette III, manufactured by state-owned Hindustan Aeronautics Limited since 1975.

In 2011, the MoD issued a global request for proposal for the purchase of 16 naval multirole helicopters in which Sikorsky (prior to its acquisition by Lockheed) with its 70B multirole helicopter emerged as the winner against NHIndustries’ NH90 of France.

The fate of this tender remains unknown, and no MoD official would confirm whether the tender has been canceled or if it be part of the new purchase.

The latest RFI will be replaced by a formal RFP likely next year, and thereafter the formal selection of the overseas OEM. The selection process for a strategic partner and an overseas OEM is likely to take two to three years, according to an MoD defense production official.

“Given the SP policy being new and MoD yet to put in place institutional framework for this policy, it is likely that the process (of acquiring these helicopters) could take up to four to five years after which the production would start in India,” the official noted.

Russian Helicopters are Ready for Serial Delivery of Modernized Ka-27M Helicopters for the Russian Ministry of Defense

MOSCOW --- The "Russian Helicopters" holding (part of Rostec State Corporation) is ready for serial delivery of modernized multirole Ka-27M helicopters for the Russian Naval Aviation. The first machine has already passed through the whole set of factory tests.

Modernization works of the Ka-27M helicopters were held within the framework of a government defense contract. According to the decision of the Directorate of aviation and weapons of the Department of the Russian Ministry of Defense for provision of government defense contracts, in late June the construction and operational documentation of the Ka-27M helicopter was validated for serial production. The modernization of the helicopters will be held at the Kumertau Aviation Production Enterprise.

The helicopter is equipped with a new tactical command system that includes new acoustic and magnetometric systems, a radio reconnaissance system, an information computation system and an active phased array airborne radar station. This provides the Ka-27M with all-around visibility and the ability to detect all types of ships and submarines; detection and destruction range has grown. Modern methods of transmitting information to land and ship command posts are installed on the helicopter; connection with other helicopters is modernized.

"The modernized Ka-27M will let the Russian Naval Aviation to complete combat missions in close-in maritime zone more efficiently. In 2016, we have shipped a preproduction batch to the Russian Ministry of Defense. The machines were highly assessed by the pilots based on the exploitation results. The modernized Ka-27M helicopters possess much greater combat potential that their predecessors and will be able to fulfil a wide range of tasks for the Navy," states Vladislav Savelyev, Deputy CEO for sales of the "Russian Helicopters" holding.

Multirole Ka-27 type helicopters of various modifications are currently the basis of the helicopter units of the Russian Naval Aviation. They provide aerial reconnaissance at sea, anti-submarine protection of naval groups, detection, tracing and destruction of submarines and ships, perform search-and-rescue operations for crews of aerial vehicles and ships who are in distress; they also implement transport tasks for ensuring successful activity of naval groups.

Igor Kozhin, Head of the Russian Naval Aviation, stated earlier that all combat Ka-27 helicopters would undergo modernization.

Russian Helicopters Produced the First Mi-28UB Helicopters for the Russian Ministry of Defense

MOSCOW --- The first Mi-28UB helicopters were produced at Rostvertol company of the Russian Helicopters Holding (the part of State Corporation "Rostec"). Machines is undergoing user acceptance testing at the company. It is planned to deliver 8 Night Hunters with dual control before the end of this year.

The Mi-28UB, designed for the Russian Aerospace Forces, passed state tests successfully. As a result, batch manufacturing of this vehicle began at the plant in Rostov in 2016. Thus, the helicopter, alongside its primary objective, can be used for flight instruction and for training flight personnel. The creation of dual control helicopters is the logical continuation of developing the concept of an attack army helicopter.

"Production of the first Mi-28UB batch is an extremely important event not only for Rosvertol and Russian Helicopters but also for our colleagues from the Russian Ministry of Defense. The delivery of modernized Night Hunters will begin soon. The Mi-28 proved its efficiency, so we are expecting that its training version will be of great demand in armies. This dual control helicopter breaks new ground for training flight personnel for machines of this type," said Andrey Boginsky, CEO of the Russian Helicopters holding.

The main difference of Mi-28UB from a classical Night Hunter is the dual control system that allows piloting the helicopter from both command cockpit and operator's cockpit. There are other special characteristics. For example, ergonomics is enhanced significantly: energy-attenuating seats with improved characteristics are installed in the cockpit; they can absorb shock energy in case of crash landing. Airborne avionics and communication tools have also been changed, and this increased the helicopter's reliability, safety and performance specifications significantly.

The Mi-28UB, as well as its predecessor, preserves its maneuvering capability and can carry out military tasks at any time of the day or night. The Mi-28UB can be used for fire support of land advanced units and antitank defense. The helicopter possesses improved armor protection and is characterized by high tolerance to battle damage and equipped with a large weapon system.

The main customer of OJSC Rostvertol is the Russian Ministry of Defense. In accordance with the approved schedule, the company delivers the whole line of produced helicopters to the Ministry and modernizes equipment produced for the Russian Ministry of Defense in cooperation with Mil Moscow Helicopter Plant and under the guidance of Russian Helicopters.

Russian Helicopters, (part of State Corporation Rostec), is one of the global leaders in helicopter production and the only helicopter design and production powerhouse in Russia. Russian Helicopters was founded in 2007 and is headquartered in Moscow. In 2016 Russian Helicopters IFRS revenues reached RUB 214.3 billion. Deliveries reached 189 helicopters.

Israel finalises Seahawk sensor configuration

Israel's air force and navy have identified the intended sensor fit for a planned fleet of second-hand Sikorsky SH-60F Seahawk maritime helicopters.

The proposed acquisition of eight ex-US Navy rotorcraft is still in its early stages, but the type is expected to enter use aboard the Israeli navy's future fleet of four Saar-6 corvettes. The USA has already approved the transfer.

Israeli sources indicate that the preferred sensor package will be based on the one currently equipping the nation's ship-based Airbus Helicopters AS565s, which are operated by the Israeli air force – including an Elta Systems maritime search radar, but with additional capabilities.

A proposal to arm the helicopters is still being evaluated, with potential candidates including Rafael's Spike air-to-surface missile.

Once acquired, the Israeli military's Seahawks will be employed for duties including protecting natural gas pumping rigs in the Mediterranean Sea. Additional responsibilities will include performing anti-terrorism tasks and anti-submarine warfare missions flown in conjunction with other aerial platforms, including air force-operated Israel Aerospace Industries Heron 1 unmanned air vehicles.

Leonardo flies first upgraded Brazilian Super Lynx

Leonardo Helicopters has performed the maiden sortie of the first of eight upgraded Super Lynx Mk21A rotorcraft for the Brazilian navy.

Each helicopter will receive new CTS800 engines, made by the Honeywell-Rolls-Royce joint venture LHTEC, as well as new glass cockpits and an advanced avionics suite.

Upgraded Brazilian Super Lynx makes maiden flight

The first modernised AH-11B Super Lynx multirole helicopter for the Brazilian Navy made its maiden flight from Leonardo Helicopters’ Yeovil facility in the United Kingdom on 28 September.

Leonardo is upgrading eight AH-11As to AH-11B standard under a EUR117 million (USD138 million) contract awarded to Leonardo Helicopters in June 2014. The aircraft are fielded by the Brazilian Navy’s HA-1 Lince Squadron, based at São Pedro da Aldeia naval airbase.

Deliveries were originally scheduled to begin in November 2017, but have since been pushed back to early 2018 and will run until February 2019, sources told Jane’s .

The upgrade package includes replacing the Rolls-Royce Gem 42-1 Mk 1017 engines with the Light Helicopter Turbine Engine Company CTS800-4N, a new night vision goggle-compatible digital glass cockpit, a new navigation and traffic collision avoidance system, an instrument landing system, electronic warfare support measures, an automatic identification system, countermeasures dispensers, and an electrically powered rescue hoist.

ADEX 2017: Romeo woos Seoul destroyer

The Republic of Korea Navy (ROKN) is expected to release an RfP for a second batch of naval helicopters suitable for anti-submarine warfare (ASW) in the next few months, probably early in 2018, and Sikorsky believes it has the best offer on the table with its MH-60R Seahawk.

Speaking to Shephard at the Seoul ADEX 2017 exhibition, Christophe Nurit, Sikorsky’s VP of Asia-Pacific sales and marketing, said, ‘The company is obviously getting ready to prepare an offer which we think will be compelling. We’ll make it as competitive as we can.’

Leonardo won a contract to deliver eight AW159 Wildcats for the ROKN’s first batch of naval helicopters, defeating the Romeo in the process. The second batch is expected to consist of 12 ASW helicopters to fulfill a long-standing requirement for 20 aircraft.

Nurit conceded that its offer will ‘not be the cheapest in the class’, but it ‘would be the most capable’ thanks to its triad of sensors, weapons and time on station. He said the MH-60R’s time on station was three times that of the closest competitor, a factor that allowed one helicopter to do the job of two competitors’ aircraft.

He also discussed the developing threat of submarines in the region. North Korea and China are likely to be of most concern, although Japan is also expanding its fleet to 22 boats.

He said a solution deemed adequate in the early 2010s, when the first ASW helicopter requirement was issued by South Korea, may not be so today. He insisted that a platform of at least 10t was necessary, and that 95% of ASW requirements worldwide chose something in this class.

The platforms would be required to operate from KDX-II and KDX-III destroyers of the ROKN.

However, Sikorsky must first again overcome competition from the AW159 Wildcat, as well as a naval variant of the KAI KUH-1Surion for the future competition.

Indeed, Nurit admitted, ‘The fact that they selected the AW159 in the first place puts us at a disadvantage.’

If the Romeo was selected, however, there is opportunity for crossovers given that 138 Black Hawks were built under licence by KAI in the past. Interoperability with the US Navy and other allies such as Australia would also be beneficial to South Korea. Integrating the helicopter with assets such as Aegis would also be boosted.

Nurit said it was too early to say what package of localisation Sikorsky could offer to Seoul, but the company could create a support and interoperability ecosystem.

‘We can put the needle wherever the customer wants us to put it, and it boils down to the business case and what makes sense for the parties,’ Nurit stated. He gave the example of Japan, where Mitsubishi Heavy Industries has locally assembled 650 Sikorsky helicopters over the years.

Second NH90 Sea Lion helicopter takes off

NH Industries on 24 November performed the maiden flight of the second prototype of the NH90 Sea Lion being developed for the German navy.

The milestone comes about a year after the initial flight-test vehicle took off from the Donauwörth facility of NHI consortium member Airbus Helicopters.

A phase of development testing focused on avionics and software will now take place, lasting several months.

Further modifications to the aircraft will take place in 2018, says Airbus Helicopters, bringing it to the delivery standard before further qualification testing.

The initial serial production aircraft is now in final assembly, ahead of first delivery scheduled for late 2019.

Germany has ordered 18 Sea Lions to replace its navy's fleet of aged Westland Sea King 41s.

Airbus Helicopters Completes AS565 MBe Panther Deliveries to Mexican Navy

MARIGNANE, France --- The Mexican Navy has received its final two AS565 MBe Panther helicopters during a delivery ceremony at Airbus Helicopters in Marignane. With their order for ten units in 2014, the Mexican Navy became the launch customer of this new version. The first four helicopters were delivered in 2016 and the remaining six during the course of 2017.

Stationed at three naval bases in the Mexican states of Veracruz, Sonora and Michoacan, the helicopters perform an average of 300 flight hours for reconnaissance, patrol missions and training flights.

“The arrival of the MBe Panther has enhanced the Navy Aviation’s operational capabilities,” explained Admiral Jose Maria Garcia Macedo, the Mexican Navy’s General Director of Naval Aviation. “It is a modern, multi-mission helicopter that we can use in both maritime and land environments for a wide range of missions, including maritime SAR, disaster relief, external load operations and even air ambulance.”

To carry out such a range of missions, the MBe Panther makes use of advanced mission equipment that includes a cargo hook, a rescue hoist, forward-looking infrared (FLIR) for night-time rescue missions and a total of four stretchers for medical evacuation.

“I would like to thank the Mexican Navy for their confidence in our helicopters,” said Mesrob Karalekian, Airbus Helicopters’ Vice-President for Latin America. “To help ensure success for their critical missions, we have made a technical and logistical support team available to them around the clock in Veracruz. Some 30 pilots have also been trained, many of them receiving specific training in SAR and night vision goggles (NVG).”

The AS565 MBe combines new and proven technologies to offer more value to operators. It is equipped with two Safran Arriel 2N engines, which enhance its performance in hot & high conditions and enable it to achieve a top speed of 278 km/h and a range of 780 kilometers. It also boasts a new main gearbox, a latest-generation tail rotor and a 4-axis autopilot that reduces crew workload and makes the most demanding missions, such as SAR, easier to perform. More powerful and efficient, the AS565 MBe is also safer, more cost-effective and easier to operate.

New Defence helicopters defective

- All four of the new NH-90 helicopters will be grounded from next week.

This is reported by VRT. The Caïman helicopters are due to take over from the former Sea Kings, in particular to carry out sea-rescue operations. However the helicopters could now be out of action for up to a year and a half as a fully operational fleet, owing to a defective radar.

The Ministry of Defence acquired the NH-90s in 2015. The helicopters cost some €35 million each. They were manufactured by a consortium of European military players, such as Airbus and Agusta-Westland. In 2019, the last three Sea Kings will finally retire after 40 years of service.

However the new aircraft are encountering significant problems. The Head of the Belgian Air Force, General Frederik Vansina indicated, “Upon delivery it was clear that something did not work smoothly.” Three of the four helicopters did not have a properly working radar as desired. Moreover the model appeared to have some early teething problems, and staff operating the aircraft have said that the radar was automatically shutting off.

The radar of three Caïmans must therefore be repaired by the manufacturer. Although initially anticipated to be a period of three to six months, this modification may however take more time. As indicated above, each helicopter may be out of service for up to a year and a half.

One of the helicopters is still operating today, but will be unavailable next week for maintenance reasons. On the current schedule, despite the possible anticipated 18-month period, the first of these Caïman helicopters is provisionally expected to be fixed during the spring. As a single helicopter is currently available, all four helicopter teams must operate flights in turn, so as not to lose their licences.

The problems on these Belgian Caïman helicopters also affect models ordered by other countries, such as the Netherlands and Germany.
